Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from AI Company's Directors
One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is exiting the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a batch of emails between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became widely known.
He commented in a statement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have participated, enthusiastic about the prospects of the company, and eagerly await tracking their development".
Summers, who formerly presided over Harvard University, stated on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.
Email Communications
The freshly disclosed emails demonstrated that the economist communicated with the financier until the day before Epstein's 2019 apprehension for alleged human trafficking of underage individuals.
In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company stated it accepted his determination to resign.
"We value his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he provided to the directors," the company commented.
Legislative Background
This announcement arrives after the two houses of Congress agreed on recently to pass a legislation that would compel the federal prosecutors to disclose its records on Epstein.
The legislation will subsequently move to the administration of President Trump for approval. The President has said he expects to endorse the legislation, after changing his stance on the subject following pushback from his base.
Email Contents
A group of Epstein-connected correspondence released by the House Oversight Committee last week mentioned numerous high-profile figures in the financier's former circle, without indicating any legal wrongdoing by those people.
The emails revealed that the professor and Epstein often met for meals, with the billionaire often attempting to connect the official to influential world leaders.
Personal Accountability
After the correspondence were shared with the wider community, he stated he assumed "complete accountability for my misguided decision to maintain communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".
He continued that he desired "to reestablish confidence and repair bonds with the persons closest to me".
Career Background
The economist held senior posts under Democratic administrations; serving as economic leader under President Clinton, and as director of the White House economic team under President Obama.
He led Harvard from five years and remains a faculty member there. When stating his step-down from public duties previously on this week, he said he would continue his teaching commitments.
Other Impacts
Following his statement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning think tank in Washington where Summers was a senior fellow, verified that the economist was ceased to be affiliated with the institution.
He entered the directorate of the AI company, which makes the language model, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to oust its top executive the company leader.
