Pacific Bluefin Fish Commands Historic Sum of 3.2 million dollars at Japanese Capital New Year Sale
A substantial bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the market's inaugural auction of the new year.
The successful offer for the 243kg fish came from the operator of a nationwide sushi restaurant group, which runs locations domestically and overseas.
"An inaugural tuna heralds fortune," stated the entrepreneur, a regular bidder at the yearly new year's auction.
Known as the Tuna Tycoon, this industry figure is renowned for submitting high bids for bluefin tuna at these symbolic new year auctions.
Bidding Surprise and Record-Setting Past
Following the auction, the winner told journalists that he was "taken aback at the final price," stating, "I believed we would be able to purchase it a little for less, but the price skyrocketed before you knew it."
This new acquisition surpasses his previous notable purchases:
- He paid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He paid 155 million yen the following year.
- In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).
Even after previously saying that he thought he "did too much," he has now managed to surpass his personal record once again.
A Tradition of High Prices
The opening auction at the Toyosu fish market is typically known for sky-high prices. In the prior year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by another sushi chain operator, which indicated the fish would be served at its restaurants nationwide.
The intense activity at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has transformed into a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
Immediate Consumption
The record-priced tuna was promptly sliced up for customers at the winner's sushi chains immediately after the auction was finished.
"I feel like I've begun the year in a good way after consuming something so lucky as the year starts," remarked one elated patron.
