The English golfer Clinches Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Play-Off Showdown Against Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated remarkable nerve to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic play-off after a rollercoaster final round of competition.
Rai sank a crucial birdie putt from around eight feet to seal the win, repeating his only previous Rolex Series triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a playoff victory against the same opponent.
Sunday's Play Drama
Rai entered the final round with a single stroke advantage over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a total score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, 67 closing round that included seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
Fleetwood moved one shot ahead with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie on the 16th, but Rai pulled level again on the 17th and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the final green.

This led to a playoff at Yas Links where Rai prevailed to take the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in winnings.

Højgaard carded six birdie putts of his as well, but his hopes of topping the standings were dented by a dropped shot on the 12th. England’s Richard Mansell hit an excellent final-round seven-under to finish tied for fifth with Australia’s Hillier.
